Why always me? ✍️

Why do I always have bad luck?
Or that is what I thought.

I recently started using an external heart rate monitor for more precise monitoring. As my old one died, I got a new one, and everything was ok for the past 3 weeks. However, last week it started to act up. It couldn't connect to my watch, which was easily fixed with a new battery. But yesterday the same issue occurred. I got mad.

My initial reaction to this: Why always me? Why do others never experience this?

But in fact they do.
As I scrolled through my Mastodon feed, someone was complaining that he couldn’t get his new phone to set up. Another toot mentioned the delivery of a broken fridge.

Phone issues Broken Fridge

So, it’s not just me. These little misfortunes are part of everyone’s story, but perhaps they don’t always share them.

And in fact, it's true. When going to a restaurant with colleagues recently, someone had to wait for his main dish to arrive, while someone else didn't get her side dish. My order was just fine.

Our brains are wired with a negativity bias, where we tend to notice and remember bad experiences more strongly than good ones. When something fails, it leaves a deeper impression than the times things go smoothly.

I’m not cursed with bad luck. It’s that my brain is keeping score unfairly.

Everyone has these stories.
Everyone gets unlucky deliveries, tech glitches, and unexpected breakdowns.
I don’t see all of theirs, and they don’t see all of mine.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
