Launching gobino.be and its themes 🥳
Welcome to gobino.be
After spending time writing, reading and sharing on this amazing platform, I decided it was time to take the next step and show my dedication to stay, via a custom domain.
From now on you can find all my updates via gobino.be.
You might remember seeing bino used before, but I decided to go with gobino for the URL, as it’s the nickname I often use on socials and with friends.
Doing this upgrade also made my fingers itch to have a go at the theme of my space. So gobino.be comes with a fitting light and dark theme.
The process
For those curious about the process, let's call it a blend of creativity, exploration, and nostalgia.
I started by exploring colour palettes, with Huement to find colour combinations that felt both modern and comfortable. I wanted to keep it visually appealing while ensuring it wouldn’t strain the eyes, especially in dark mode.
I did my first edits on Playcode.io, where I played around with the Bear theme’s CSS and HTML snippets from my posts. This allowed me to quickly test the look and feel of each colour palette on my content.
Fonts were the next consideration, and after checking Google Fonts, I chose those that felt fresh, clean, and easy to read.
As final fine-tuning, I moved the CSS and demo pages to my local drive, working with Sublime Text and Safari to speed up testing the final tweaks.
When the layout and colours felt right, I tested it live using the CSS playground of mgx.me.
Nostalgia
This project brought back memories of my early days building websites 20 years ago, spending countless hours getting layouts just right and often wrestling with Internet Explorer's compatibility.
Today’s process was simpler, thanks to better frameworks and tools, but the joy of tweaking and perfecting the design came back as before.
Inspiration
While much of this theme is uniquely mine, I’d like to acknowledge the inspiration I found in Robert Birming's “Bearming” theme and the stylistic touches from JCProbably on italics and other elements.
Guestbook
As a final touch, I added a guestbook and invite you to sign it. This blog isn’t just a place for me to share my thoughts, it’s a space to connect. I’d love to hear from you, whether it’s feedback on the new look or a simple hello.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m looking forward to sharing more posts, insights, and ideas here.
